Angie Van Mulken

I’ve had a lifelong attraction to art. As a young adult, I completed design school and worked professionally for two decades. I returned to school for a BsBa in 2014 but left the field. During COVID-19, I took the chance to pursue creative art full-time. I’m currently based in Hawaii and Seattle, WA. I’ve been fortunate to sell original art and prints through social media and my connections. I’ve been given extraordinary help from above when maneuvering through this journey. I’m passionate about people, creativity, culture and beauty.

1. How would you describe your art style, and what inspired you to become an artist?

According to some, my art style is whimsical and dreamy with a touch of magic. I like that thought. Because I’ve never been able to choose a particular style or medium, I create works I like to ponder. I’m afraid to be boxed into an art style or specific medium. I don’t want to limit my growth or enjoyment. As with many 80’s kids, I grew up watching the beloved Bob Ross. As a child, I did think “someday”. Due to lack of work during COVID (like many others stuck at home) I decided now or never. I began selling at the local street market and then posting on social media. I’ve had an overwhelming amount of support.

I strive to create pieces that are both visually stunning and emotionally impactful. I am always learning and exploring creative processes.

2. Can you tell us about a particular piece of art that holds special meaning for you?

The piece ‘Family’ is an Acrylic wash painting. It is one of my earliest works. The significant aspect of this painting is that it came in through a dream and a message that says not to sell this piece. I painted it very quickly and when I finished working on it, I realized it was my family. I am the cat that ties everyone together.

3. How do you approach collaboration with other artists or creatives?

I love working in collaboration and promoting other humans. I believe the door that opens for me is mine, and likewise, if the door is for another person, that is fantastic for them. Life is too short not to network and be grateful for any opportunities. I have been working as an artist for such a short period, and I feel I’m just beginning. I certainly look forward to future collaborations.

4. What has been the most rewarding aspect of your art journey?

The best part is making art and selling it to someone who likes it enough to pay for it. However, the biggest reward has been the overwhelming support from so many people. I wouldn’t say I have idols, but the celebrity support is fantastic. There are many people that I admire and respect who have been very generous and kind about my work.

I’ve always created art with the purpose of making a unique, original piece. While I would enjoy the finished works to be pleasing to others, it’s never been the priority.

5. What advice would you give to the aspiring artists?

Believe in yourself and trust your intuition. Do not compare yourself to others. Work on any aspect of your goal every single day. Find the people that support you and support them back. Share your work with everyone. Be humble, gracious, and grateful. Rest when you need to, but don’t give up. Never stop learning.
