Meet Annika Freiberger, a contemporary abstract artist whose work is all about the beauty of nature and the journey of human life. In this interview, Annika opens up about her creative journey, her inspirations, and the lessons she’s learned along the way. She shares how her art reflects her love for nature and human experiences, and how her intuitive creative process shapes her bold, abstract works. She also talks about the challenges she faces as an artist and mother, the rewards of her art journey, and the transformative moments that have helped her truly accept her identity as an artist.
My name is Annika Freiberger and I am a contemporary abstract artist. I studied fine arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart and philosophy at the University of Stuttgart. After completing my studies, I continued to develop myself through ongoing training and work with various media. My works are created by layering different media on top of each other. I work very intuitively and am inspired by the underlying level. What I am particularly interested in formally are the flow of color, the diversity of brush strokes and the play with transparency and opaqueness.
My work is inspired by nature and human existence. On the one hand, I am interested in the movements of nature: the wind in the trees and in the fields, the movements of waves or the water surface of a lake. The shadows that the leaves cast on each other when you look up in the forest. The sun’s rays falling through the treetops, rivers, the development and growth of things. But, on the other hand, there is always a parallel to human existence: to developing one’s personality, to dealing with difficult situations; It’s often about the things that concern and stress us. I try to give the impetus not to repress these, but to accept them as tasks, embrace them and learn from them.
My works are abstract, for me this is the world in which I can express myself the most and which flows from me. Abstract works speak to my heart and I want mine to speak to the hearts of others too. What really touches me are colors and color combinations, which I experiment with a lot. I try to find harmonies, but not always the ones you would expect. My works often have a twist that makes them exciting and special. My compositions are moving because they are inspired by the movements. They are mostly falling, flowing, floating, twisting and turning, dissolving and coming together again. Creative work has always been my thing; it took a long time for me to develop my personality and my self-confidence to see and describe myself as an artist.

The painting that means the most to me is “Impression Sunrise” by Claude Monet. It’s not so much because of the picture itself, but because it’s been hanging in my house for years and I’ve been looking at it again and again and always discovering new things. It showed me how much you can discover in a single work, how much artists put into it, which sometimes only reveals itself after a long time. I have never looked at any other work so often and for so long; it has taught me a lot.
What has had a significant impact on me in the last few months was taking part in a year-long program at an art institute. Although I have already studied art, I only now really see myself as an artist. Not only did I learn painting and drawing again from scratch, but I was also able to let it all go again and admit to myself where my passion really lies in painting.
Since I am not only an artist, but also the mother of two children, my final opponent is currently time. I learned to use the little time I had effectively and at the same time not to put too much pressure on myself. Although art is very important to me, my children always come first. There will be a time in my life again when I have more time for myself and art. This special time with baby and small child won’t last forever and I want to make the most of it and take what I can with me.

For me, art is not only what I put out there and what others see, but also what I learn through it. For me it is a balance to everyday life and since I work very intuitively and often just let things happen, it is a fascinating and uncontrollable journey. I am so often surprised by what lies within me and what I can achieve. I think the very best thing art gives me is confidence and perseverance.
