Kait Matthews, an artist and illustrator of Ojibwe/Potawatomi heritage and a proud member of the Chippewas of Rama was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. After graduating from the Laguna College of Art and Design, she settled in North San Diego County with her partner and their beloved rescue animals. Kait draws inspiration from the natural forces of earth, sea, and sky, reflecting on the significance of the environment in her work. She strives to mirror the soul of Mother Earth, exploring her beauty, challenges, and vast moods in a changing world.
While Kait has previously focused on oil painting, she is embracing the world of digital painting, finding joy in the new ways to express her creativity without the hassle of cleaning brushes. She appreciates how digital art allows her to reach a broader audience through social media and provides the option to print quality images for interested buyers. Additionally, Kait enjoys working as an illustrator, which offers yet another way to share her artistic vision.
She hopes her art resonates with viewers, awakening their creative spirit. She aims for her work to be a mirror, allowing people to see reflections of themselves and the world. For Kait, the connection and interpretation that each person finds in her art are just as important as the creation itself, and she believes that when someone sees a piece of themselves in her work, she has fulfilled her purpose as an artist.
I am of Ojibway/Potawatomi heritage. My background as a child of the Sixties Scoop and as the daughter of a survivor of the Indian Residential School system in Canada influences my works. In my art I gravitate toward the intricate connections between the environment and Indigenous peoples, focusing on the state of Indigenous communities, especially women. These women, who often bear the brunt of environmental degradation and prejudice, are the true heroes of my works.
It is my wish that art can be seen and appreciated by all.

I research stories and digitally gather artworks that inspire me. I collect tons of references before beginning any project. I then focus on a mood or color combination that sets the tone and feel I am trying to achieve in each painting. As my current work is created digitally, it’s fun to experiment with background, textures, and composition. I never know exactly how the final painting will turn out, but at least I have a starting point. If I can enjoy the journey, I do not have to worry about the result.
In my latest series, inspiration grew from traditional Indigenous stories that focus on the unsung tales of Native American women. These stories speak to me and are part of my history. The fascinating tales of goddesses, life-givers, and protectors of the earth have profoundly influenced my work. I strive to infuse each portrait with a sense of wisdom and beauty.
I’ve collected many art books over the years, all of which are food for thought and inspiration! If I’m not working on a project, I love to pick up a pencil and begin to draw. Sometimes, I’ll jot down ideas for future projects. I’ll watch an instructional video or take an art class in person or online.
The creative soul in everyone needs to be awakened, inspired, and nurtured. When you view my art, I hope it offers a connection, a mirror in which you can see a little of yourself and this world reflecting back.

I work as a painter as well as an illustrator. I am the illustrator of the Clarity Tarot Deck. I’ve also partnered with writer Leigh Podgorski and illustrated the FlowerWise Oracle Deck, both projects published by RedFeather Publishing. Leigh and I have teamed up with House of Indigo Publishing for our next project. We have created a beautifully illustrated book, “Feathers of Wisdom ~ Weaving Art, Words, and Insight through Stories, Legends, and Myths of Indigenous Women throughout the Ages.” Stories of strength, resilience, love, and commitment feature heroines, goddesses, and female archetypes.
Kait Matthews’ art goes beyond the canvas, telling stories that honour Indigenous culture, nature, and the influential roles of Native American women.
