Pooja Murgai Taneja

I am an Innovative Abstract Realism artist born in India (Mumbai). I use mixed media to blend abstract forms with realistic details to evoke emotions. I have been exhibiting my work with various Galleries in the USA and India and have gained recognition for my work. My pieces often feature themes of Love, Empowerment, and Beauty, which invite my viewers to explore the depths of their interpretations and deeper emotions. My work has been exhibited at The New York Art Expo, Voyage and Arts for Heart studio visit, and Animal series magazines. Currently based in Houston, Texas, I am still exploring the boundaries of art while experimenting with new techniques and materials to push the envelope and my artistic expression.

I believe that, at a core level, we all want to express and feel unconditional love. When I create, I feel a deep emotional bond with my painting subject. There is a sense of passion and spiritual connection throughout my creative process. I desire this to translate from my work into beauty and radiance within the viewer’s space, connect with them at a higher level, and bring in the experience of love and peace. Through my artwork and leading by example, I hope to encourage people to follow their dreams and spread love.

1. Can you tell us a little about yourself and your background?

Born and raised in Mumbai, India. From a young age, I have always been attracted to colours, often found in colouring. My talent was recognized early on when I won interschool art competitions and was encouraged by my family to create. As a teenager, I loved visiting different parts of India and collecting local arts and crafts. After my marriage, I moved to Dubai, UAE, where I learned about Middle Eastern culture. My unconditional love for art extends to all forms, including poetry, pottery, dance, and baking. I reside in a suburb of Houston, Texas, in the United States.

The move made me realise her true calling of being an artist. My life took a turn in the Summer of 2019 when I reintroduced myself to the art of healing. I was dealing with depression after the loss of my younger brother, and in the countless therapy sessions and meditations, I always looked for a reply to “What is my purpose on this planet.” During one of my meditation sessions, I had a vision of creating a bold woman’s portrait, and I instantly knew that it was my calling. Art connected me with my brother, as we always used to sit together when we were younger, and I would sketch and paint while he read his book. Art helped me heal myself and create subjects that helped me showcase my beliefs.

I believe that at a core level, we all want to express and feel unconditional love.

2. What inspired you to become an artist?

When I started to create, I used art as a form of healing after the loss of my brother. I realized in time that art was not only healing me, but I had the power to change certain beliefs and norms of society by empowering people to find their voice. My family and friends’ support helped me through my journey while empowering me to create more. I always craved independence in my life, and art was my way to create the life I wanted.

3. What is your creative process like from start to finish?

I start with creating my source by blending and mixing colours, placing objects in juxtaposition, and also keeping in mind the story I wish to portray; once I have created my source on my iPad, I create a quick sketch on my canvas and start to add Collage, Inks and texture, thin washes of colour are added on to the dry mediums while working on the entire piece at the same time, slowly building dept and finishing up with oil paints. Incorporating different mediums and working in layers helps me create depth while expressing my passion for art.

4. What role does experimentation play in your art practice?

My Personality shows in my art, as I have always loved to experiment with different things. I use various mediums or different strokes and styles to expand my creativity. Experimenting with style and mediums keeps me creating, and I feel excited about the projects I have in hand.

Throughout my creative process, there is a sense of passion and spiritual connection.
