I don't make the monsters. The monsters make me.

Courtney Treglia is an artist and writer born and raised in New York. Spending half of her time in Rochester developed her love of nature, and the other half on Long Island opened her eyes to the disparity and elitism of small suburban living. Courtney has always processed her emotions through art, manifesting her life into surreal, fantasy, and sci-fi creatures. Embracing the experience of process, her work expands on traditional printmaking techniques to share her most personal and vulnerable moments in the form of otherworldly and ethereal forms. As the Assistant to the Chair of the Art Education department at the School of Visual Arts and an Ed.M. candidate in Art & Art Education at Teachers College at Columbia University in Art & Art Education, art education is the bedrock for Courtney’s work in accessibility and equity to build a more empathetic world. In 2021, Courtney was diagnosed with PTSD which led to her first collection of poetry, “Lost Objects & Found Memories” she printed and bound by hand. After selling out all handmade copies, the poetry book was picked up by independent publisher, Bryson Publishing and released on paperback in 2024 which was featured on the printmaking podcast, “Hello, Print Friend.” In her spare time, Courtney likes to make silly little coffee drinks for her and her partner, play Animal Crossing, or play with her cats — Kiki, Luna, and Ash.
Courtney is inspired by tales of transformation whether it is in fairy-tales, mythology, or horror. Her work is influenced by a converging love of old analog techniques such as printmaking, hand drawn animation, film photography, bookbinding, and the use of a typewriter. She sees art in all creative forms including writing, music, and visual art as influences and informs her own work in those fields, including her academic research in science fiction as cultural and historical form of art and storytelling.
Her first book was published by Bryson Publishing in 2023, "Lost Objects & Found Memories." It is a book of poetry about grief and longing for place to resuscitate the self through memories and experience during the pandemic shutdown.
Creating a mural with Teachers College Community school's 1st grade class in memory of their classmate who passed away unexpectedly called "Brendan's Buddy Bench" in 2022. Being recommended as an artist who could work with young children through tough conversations about grief to create art and being trusted by the family to honor their son's life will always remain deeply in her self and her practice.
