My name is Jessica Dawn and I am an Australian artist who creates digital paintings thoughtfully inspired by photography and recreated completely by hand drawing directly into the digital format. I studied my BFA at The National Art School in Darlinghurst, Sydney, graduating in 2009. I originally painted in the traditional mediums using oil paint and acrylic, though I struggled to produce work consistently while I worked and traveled. I realized the art world was evolving with innovations, and that I also really enjoyed utilizing the tools of technology, so I learnt how to use my thought process and skills in the digital medium. My practice now manifests balancing these two worlds of the analogue and digital, using paintery aesthetics and the eminence of printing to create my contemporary artworks.
My body of work is mostly composed of portraits. I like to concentrate on the intricate and subtl distinctions of human expression and the unique characteristics of each individual subject, bringing forward an intimate glimpse into their individuality. I also find a deep sense of joy and inspiration in any moment captured in time which evokes a sense of beauty and wonder. I have also completed still life, animal subjects, and I have an appreciation for the serenc and majestic beauty found in landscapes. As well as a sense of beauty, my artworks strive to tell a story. I am drawn to narrative artwork which can go as far as be theatrical, or be a subtle point of difference.
The last 12 months have been advantageous for me where I have had three opportunities to be part of seperate artist showcases in public cultural hubs in New York, London and Las Vegas. It really excited me since these exhibitions offered veiwers an unexpected experience outside of the gallery, allowing the audience to engage with art in a serendipitous way.
