Art for wildlife conservation
Katie-Mai is a contemporary artist of English and Chinese heritage. Born and raised in the UK, she currently lives in Denver, Colorado. Always creating from a young age, Katie-Mai enjoys painting and drawing, as well as illustrating children’s book. Katie-Mai holds four degrees, none of which are art related!
In 2022, the birth of Katie-Mai’s first child ignited a profound artistic awakening. Inspired by a lifetime of incredible encounters with animals, the she grappled with the unsettling thought that these magnificent creatures might not exist for her children to experience. And so after over a decade and a half of not picking up a paint brush, Katie-Mai was fueled with a passionate artistic pursuit focused on wildlife.
Through her art, Katie-Mai strives to ignite a sense of wonder and appreciation for wildlife. She aims to inspire viewers to connect with the majesty and resilience of the animals we share this planet with, while also provoking thought about our shared responsibility to conserve for future generations.
Katie-Mai uses negative space to compel the viewer to focus purely on the subject, the animal. The animal is purposely painted at a smaller scale to almost force the viewer to lean into the painting to appreciate the tiny details she spends hours painting. The over effects is a sense of calm and engagement with the painting that is void of distraction.
