Busy layering images on my Ipad or on Paper

Details

As a child, I enjoyed painting, collage, and drawing. However, when I became a mother, I stopped making art because I felt so consumed by being a parent. Only now do I recognise the importance of art-making for my well-being.

In 2020, when I spent a year studying fashion design and technology, I began drawing fashion inspired by the 1930s and 1940s. From there, I found my interest in vintage patterns and designs. I realised that my upbringing during the 1970s was what was influencing me. In 2021, I studied Visual Arts and rediscovered Collaging. Suddenly, I began creating analog collages using vintage images of women, botanicals, insects, patterns, etc. My historical research skills lead me to discover online access to historical photos and patterns. This intuitive journey of discovery is how I also create my art pieces.

My academic background as an archaeologist, museologist, and teacher influences my work. When I look at each piece of art that I make, I can see the layers, the history, and the stories of the past that become a contemporary self-portrait.

I am a mixed-media artist who creates analog and digital collages. I use historical images in paper and digital form to create artworks that suggest self-discovery and represent beauty, wonder, and joy. Each piece is intuitively designed, with no planning other than a desire to create a beautiful piece. I am limited by what I have on hand when working with paper. Each analog collage piece is about 30cm x 30cm.

When I work digitally, I research and discover images of the past and work with what appeals to me. I use Procreate, which enables me to be extraordinarily creative. I enjoy working with both paper and digital mediums. Each piece takes around 2-4 hours to create.

I am inspired by Social History, Archaeology, People of the past, Architecture, Nature, Botanicals, Insects, Colour, Landscapes, the 1920s-1970s, various art movements such as Art Nouveau and Mid-century modern,  and the female form.
