Artist Bio

Olena Hrynevych (Ukraine/Germany) holds a master’s in History and English Philology (Kyiv, Ukraine). She studied Graphic Design at Projector (Kyiv, 2024) and Cooperative Cultural Entrepreneurship at Travelling University and Mondragon University (Spain, 2024), and took part in the International Curatorial Program at NODE Center for Curatorial Studies, Berlin (2025–2026).

Her practice, grounded in analogue collage and mixed-media, extends into the digital realm, with compositions manually refined by the artist. Her works have been exhibited internationally, including in Ukraine, Germany, the UK, Italy, Switzerland, the UAE, with live creation of two artworks in front of an audience at ArtBoxExpo Basel 2025. She also participated as a selected artist in the Florence Biennale (Italy, October 18–26, 2025), in the Digital section, highlighting her engagement with an established international institutional platform.

Her works have been published in Arts to Hearts Project: Artists to Watch 001 (2025), 101 ArtBook: Nature Edition (2025), and 101 ArtBook: Portrait Edition (2025), all by Charuka Arora Studio, underscoring her international recognition.

Artist Statement

My practice investigates the intersection of process, materiality, and conceptual inquiry across analog and digital media. In live performances, such as Court of Misrule and NeXus at Artboxy Expo Basel 2025, I create works directly in front of the audience. This transforms the exhibition space into a distinctive environment for dialogue, experimentation, and shared perception, highlighting the singular experience of witnessing art come to life.

In digitally-produced series — Golden ∫kin, Acta Juris, Chess e∫cape, and Power ∫trategy — I translate abstract systems of logic, strategy, and power into visual and corporeal structures. These works function simultaneously as analytical tools and poetic expressions, exploring the intersections of memory, sovereignty, strategy, and symbolic power.

Across all formats, my work emphasizes process as inquiry and perception as strategy.

Visual form becomes a space where material, concept, and social context converge in a living, perceptual, and tangible artistic experience.

Theme & Inspiration

Across all formats, my work investigates how gesture, material, and concept converge to form a living, perceptual, and tangible artistic experience — a space where intellectual rigor and sensory immediacy coexist.

The Golden ∫kin

The Golden ∫kin series explores the interplay of digital abstraction and mathematical notation, where form and structure unfold as parts of a unified poetics. The integral sign (∫) serves as a key marker of continuity and transition, bringing together abstraction, logic, and corporeality. Live Collage Performance at Artboxy Expo Basel 2025

Court of Misrule and NeXus were created entirely in front of the audience, making the act of making central to the work. By revealing gestures, materials, and evolving structures in real time, these performances transform the exhibition into a space of dialogue and experimentation. Analog collage performed live remains rare at major art fairs, emphasizing that the value of art lies not only in the finished piece but in the unique, unrepeatable moment of creation.

NeXus traces the convergence of corporeal presence, tactile matter, and sensory charge. The composition unfolds in a state of controlled excess, where contrasting fragments do not simply collide but form transient alignments. Court of Misrule explores a state of shifted order, where familiar structures and hierarchies are reinterpreted. The composition features images as key elements, with chance playing a vital role in shaping meanings and connections. The central motif is a whimsical world inspired by “Alice’s Adventures,” where the familiar unfolds into new meanings. Acta Juris

Acta Juris examines the artistic image as a tool for postcolonial legal inquiry. The visual form functions simultaneously as testimony and an analytical act, recording memory, sovereignty, and autonomy. The series creates an archive of sovereignty, reflecting the interplay between individual and institutional, where the artistic image operates as evidence and a subject of analytical study. Its structure emphasizes the logic of legal analysis, transforming visual forms into a space for systematic investigation. The series is shown here in excerpted form. A three-quarter portrait reveals a young face and a bare chest, only partially veiled by sparse linen. Light glides along the collarbone and diagonally across the chest, transforming intimate contact into a clause of the agreement. In this image, “breach” emerges as the body’s right to exceed the terms — as evidence that a contract is never truly closed.

The figure is captured frontally: a belt of dark velvet intersects with coarse fabric whose fibers resemble an archival document, worn by time. The vertical alignment of the arms stabilizes the composition, as though the body were upholding the structure of a contract. Light reveals the contrast of textures — rough and smooth — turning matter into a visual seal. Here, the “oath” is not an act of freedom, but an obligation inscribed into the fabric of the everyday.

A three-quarter portrait of the upper torso. The hand crosses the chest; the fabric is drawn toward the shoulder. The gesture creates a “reservation” within the agreement: the subject retains part of their rights, delineating a personal territory. Light gathers a triangle — profile – collarbone – hand line — transforming it into a schematic of consent and its limits.

A fragment of a female profile turning toward the viewer sets the axis of gaze and light. The line of the neck and collarbone functions as a vector of assertion: the figure’s presence establishes “principles” — not as abstract norms, but as an embodied choice of openness.

The composition of legs, extended diagonally and anchored to the floor, creates a figure of stability. The line of the fabric and the texture of the background enhance the sense of material support, articulating “grounds” — bodily, spatial, artistic — as markers of one’s stance within the discourse of refusal.

A view from the back. The vertical of the spine and the horizontal of the shoulder blades form a stable symbol. In legal terms, standing refers to the right to be heard and to bring a claim. The pose affirms subjecthood: the figure holds its axis and asserts its own jurisdiction.

Chess e∫cape

Chess e∫cape interprets opening systems as strategic models of interaction, resistance, and negotiation. Concepts such as initiative, prophylaxis, and zugzwang are read as metaphors of diplomacy, endurance, and transformation. The series develops a visual language where asymmetry and fluidity reflect the instability of strategic positions. Chess emerges as a philosophical framework, linking calculation with perception and individual gesture with collective code. The series is shown here in excerpted form.
