Lakeshia Williams, known professionally as L. Renee, is a visual artist whose creative journey began in childhood with pencil, paper, and crayons. After pausing for many years to build a career in medicine, she returned to art in 2022 with renewed purpose. Her practice spans custom portrait drawings in charcoal and graphite as well as large-scale abstract mixed media paintings that explore themes of transformation, healing, resilience, and spiritual connection.
Born and raised in Kentucky and based in the U.S., Williams also works as a travel medical provider, a role that deeply informs her art. Her proximity to both the fragility and strength of the human spirit in the surgical setting influences her approach, translating lived experiences into visual language rooted in reflection, storytelling, and emotional depth.
Williams’s artwork has received international recognition through exhibitions, publications, and awards. In 2025, she was selected for the Women in Art Biennale in London, featured in Arts to Hearts Magazine – Issue 10, and included in the International Artist Award Book, distributed globally. Her growing list of honors underscores her emerging presence on the international art stage.
Through both her portraits and expressive abstracts, Williams blends realism with symbolism, gesture, and texture. Her work invites viewers to pause, reflect, and connect with narratives of becoming, resilience, and light.
In both portraits and abstract paintings, I explore themes of emotion, growth, healing, and transition. Creating art grounds me in the midst of the intensity of my work in medicine, while also allowing me to connect with others on a deeper level. It is my way of translating complex emotions and unspoken truths into a visual language that invites reflection and dialogue. My process balances discipline with intuition. In my graphite and charcoal drawings, I strive to move beyond surface likeness to capture the essence of the individual—their inner strength, vulnerabilities, and stories embedded in expression. My abstract paintings, in contrast, rely on layered textures, fluid movement, and the interplay of darkness and light. These elements serve as metaphors for transformation, for the tension between struggle and renewal, and for the light that emerges even in life’s heaviest transitions.
Art, to me, is not separate from lived experience—it is deeply rooted in it. The themes of my work are not chosen at random but arise from the very intersections of my own journey: faith, growth, transformation, and resilience. Each piece is both a personal meditation and an offering outward, a chance for others to find themselves mirrored in the work. Ultimately, I create art as an act of connection. My hope is that viewers see not only my story, but also their own reflected back to them—moments of transition, resilience, and grace. In every portrait and every abstract composition, I aim to testify that while life is marked by change and fragility, it is also illuminated by beauty, strength, and light.
Recognitions in 2025 underscore the artist’s expanding international profile, with selections in exhibitions and publications of global reach.
