Where Dreams Become Reality

Details

I have lived the life of a nomad and hermit most of my life and I have worked on gathering the interwoven threads of many careers through my collage practice. I started out as a French instructor in the U.S. and as an ESL teacher in France. I majored in linguistics and animal symbolism in 19th century French literature. I then added to this eclectic mixture a few years as an arts administrator in British Columbia, Canada followed by theatre training in both the U.S. and the U.K. .

The ultimate challenge facing me was to bring these disciplines together along with the depth and variety of my life experiences. I discovered the cut and paste solution in 2001 and haven't stopped since. After brain surgery in 2007, I trained as a Soul Collage facilitator  which involves gentle soul-tending through traditional collage methods. This has been a rewarding path for me that I love to share. Right now, I am simply putting one creative foot in front of the other following my very hungry imagination.

Julia Still’s artistry in collage is an odyssey through the internal and external travels of life,
reflecting a commitment to exploring the multifaceted human experience. Her chosen
medium of collage enables her to weave together disparate elements into a coherent whole
that visually represents individual pathways and moments. This approach aligns with
her philosophical embrace of life’s unpredictable journey, which she believes should be
navigated with heart, imagination, and openness.
Her work, deeply inspired by literary quotes from Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Herman
Hesse, resonates with those who view life as a constellation of complex, beautiful
experiences. Julia’s collages are not just visual expressions but are imbued with personal
meaning and spiritual depth, aiming to speak for her body, heart, and soul’s travels.
One of her notable pieces, “Edgewalker,” is a testament to her style—combining mixed
media to create an 8” x 10” landscape that invites the viewer to walk the edge between the
known and the unknown. The artwork, with its intricate assembly and evocative imagery,
challenges the observer to find beauty in irregularity and complexity, mirroring the stars’
steady, guided paths through the chaos of space.
Julia Still’s unique approach sets her apart in the art world, making her works not only
significant in their aesthetic appeal but also profound in their philosophical and emotional
depth. Each piece serves as a narrative of personal and collective consciousness, offering a
glimpse into hidden worlds within worlds, beautifully captured through the lens of her
    collage art .
