Lori Moretti is a Boston-based contemporary figurative painter whose emotionally resonant work explores the complexities of womanhood, identity and the socio-political forces that shape both. Born with a crayon in hand, she spent her formative years immersed in the art room, studying for several years under master painter Joseph Salafia. She went on to earn a dual degree in Psychology and Fine Arts from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts.

Lori also built a successful career in advertising and public relations, founding CM Communications in 1986. Her award-winning agency has represented major arts, culture, and hospitality clients nationwide serving as an outlet for her lifelong creative drive.

Throughout her professional journey, Lori has continued to paint, study, and exhibit. She has trained under artists Mark Daniel Nelson, Robert Henry, and Jim Peters, and frequently attends workshops at the Sarasota Art Center, Provincetown Fine Arts Center, Provincetown Art Association, and South Shore Art Center. Her work has appeared in numerous national juried shows and is held in private collections.

In Artscope magazine, critic Beth Neville praised her painting Doreen, writing: “Great art combines three qualities: a sure command of the media, a unique creative idea, and a universal symbol. This work exhibits all three.”

nherent in my paintings is the outlook of a girl raised during a time when society made a big shift in its expectations of women. These mixed messages created a chasm within which both females and males became preternaturally trapped. A product of the psycho dynamics of an era, my paintings reflect the confusion, alienation and loneliness of the individual in solitude, in groups, and of society as a whole. The majority of my work is figurative. However, I am compelled to express similar themes in my abstract work, landscapes and cityscapes, finding emotional resonance and pathos in the most common places.

In recent years, particularly in the face of losing our democracy, I’ve felt an increasing urgency to create work that confronts the forces eroding civil rights, particularly women’s, and silencing dissent. What began as personal exploration has evolved into a form of visual activism—an effort to bear witness, hopefully galvanize others, and affirm that art can still speak truth in a moment when so much is at stake.
