Gillian Wainwright is a New Jersey-based painter whose work blends perceptual observation with abstraction, resulting in loose, colorful compositions. She holds a BFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she studied with Dan Gustin. Recent paintings explore the rhythms of her backyard garden, balancing structure with spontaneity. Wainwright has exhibited widely, with solo and group shows across the U.S., and her work is included in both private and corporate collections. She has been featured in Create! Magazine, Visionary Art Collective, and NJArts.net. In addition to her studio practice, she has taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and other institutions.
I have always loved working from life, especially outdoors, where shifts in light and weather bring constant change. During the pandemic, I turned inward, transforming my small urban backyard into a lush garden that became my primary subject. Over four years, my paintings have evolved from literal depictions to looser, more gestural explorations of color, movement, and perception. Each work celebrates the materiality of paint while reflecting the desire to hold onto fleeting moments and find meaning in chaos—lush, unruly, and alive.
