Shaping the unseen wild
Shaping the unseen wild
Grace Wilding is a multi-faceted sculptor whose work explores the intersections of nature, belief, and the reclamation of women’s bodies and voices. Her sculptures are deeply personal, offering tangible expressions of her inner world. Often pairing strong exterior forms with vibrant interiors, her work speaks to healing, transformation, and the beauty of what lives beneath the surface.
Raised in a large military family, Grace lived in Texas, Japan, Utah, Florida, Germany, England, and Idaho. Her parents packed all seven children into youth hostels to see the world’s most extraordinary art. Being exuberant children, they earned the dubious honor of being ejected from the Roman Forum, the Louvre, the Smithsonian, and the British Museum. Her mother immersed her in art and music, while her father brought her into the wilderness. Together, they instilled in her a lifelong reverence for creativity and the natural world. Grace was exposed to artistic masters at a young age—Bernini, Rodin, Michelangelo, Hokusai, and countless others—and learned early to observe deeply, adapt to new surroundings, and find beauty across cultures, beliefs, histories, and landscapes.
Her career spans art in education, corporate learning design, humanitarian program design, and social impact consulting before turning to art full-time in 2022. With advanced degrees from Weber State and Harvard, she integrates her expertise in human-centered design and cultural engagement into her artistic practice.
Her sculptures invite reflection on the beauty, vitality, and complexity within each of us. Through shape and material, she creates works that give form to what is often hidden, shaping the wild unseen into tangible presence.
My work explores what is carried inside and how it takes form in the body. I sculpt to reclaim women’s bodies and voices, creating exterior forms that hold what was once hidden. My Protector series pairs strong outer figures with vibrant interior elements, representing the heart, anger, and other essential forces that remain alive even in silence.
I work primarily in clay, resin, and polymer, sometimes leaving surfaces unrefined or intentionally cracked. These choices speak to endurance, transformation, and the honesty of materials that show their own history. My process is intuitive and physical, guided by what the form needs to say.
Raised among multiple cultures and shaped by both beauty and constraint, I create work that holds complexity. Each piece invites reflection on vitality, truth, and the possibility of repair. My sculptures are offerings of presence, shaping the wild unseen into tangible form.
My work centers on reclamation, healing, and the complexity of what we carry inside. I create sculptures that explore the intersections of nature, belief, and the reclamation of women’s bodies and voices. Many pieces pair strong exterior forms with vibrant interiors, representing essential forces such as the heart, anger, and resilience that remain alive within.
I draw inspiration from the cultures and landscapes I have lived in and traveled through, from deserts to coastlines to forests across the United States, Asia, and Europe. The natural world shapes the textures, forms, and movements within my work. My cross-cultural upbringing, early immersion in art history, and career in education and humanitarian design inform my practice and my commitment to creating art that speaks to beauty, vitality, and transformation.
