Details

Karla Cecilia Rodríguez was born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1979 but grew up in Nicaragua, where she developed her love for art by drawing from a young age. Her art explores transformation and the beauty of the discarded, turning traces and fragments into visual stories that invite viewers to see the world from a new perspective.

In 1998, she took her first watercolor and charcoal course, which reaffirmed her calling but she studied International Business & Marketing at Loyola University New Orleans and earned a Master's in Social Responsibility & Human Resources at ESERP Barcelona. Despite her academic background, art remained a constant in her life. In 2002, she began experimenting with oil and acrylic painting, and in 2006, she moved to Madrid to study under Jon Ander del Arco and Jaime Hernández de la Torre, as well as graphic design and photography.

In 2009, she discovered collage and studied contemporary techniques at the Accademia D’Arte ADA with Sonia de Franceschi in Florence, Italy. Her first work in this technique, created with recycled materials, was selected for a painting biennial that same year. In 2015, she joined a workshop with Nuria Balcells in Barcelona, where she refined her style using everyday elements.

Her works have been exhibited at the Central Bank of Nicaragua, the Rubén Darío National Theater, and the Ortiz Guardián Foundation. In 2020 and 2021, she participated in an exhibition at the Walt Disney Museum in San Francisco, CA. Additionally, she was selected for the "Curating Collage Workshop" by Kolaj Magazine, an experience in which she curated a piece for the Fleming Museum in Vermont and connected with other international artists passionate about collage. Her artwork was featured in Kolaj Magazine #41 in "Selections from the Collection" curated by Bettina Homann.

“I keep folded scraps of wrapping paper, still with bits of tape clinging to them, and drawings tucked away in my bedside table. They are fragments of moments, fleeting memories I refuse to throw away. I have always found beauty in reuse, in giving a second life to what was once discarded. ‘Reuse to preserve’ is more than just a practice — it’s a philosophy that guides my work. Through my collages, I capture the dynamism of a world in constant transformation. The vibrant colors and overlapping textures become a reflection of my emotions and my deep connection to nature. My art is a bridge between the personal and the collective, an invitation to rethink our relationship with materials, memory, and the environment. I seek to raise awareness through aesthetics, allowing chaos and spontaneity to play a role in the visual narrative. In each piece, disorder turns into harmony, revealing new perspectives on the ephemeral and the enduring.”

Karla Cecilia's collage art emphasizes environmental conservation by transforming discarded materials into vibrant, meaningful pieces, inspiring reflection on sustainability, waste reduction, and reimagining waste as a resource to foster a more eco-friendly future.

Karla Cecilia’s work has been exhibited at renowned venues such as the Central Bank of Nicaragua, the Rubén Darío National Theater, and the Ortiz Guardián Foundation. She was selected to participate in an online exhibition at the Walt Disney Museum in San Francisco in 2020 and 2021, and was selected for Kolaj Magazine’s "Curating Collage Workshop," where she curated a piece for the Fleming Museum in Vermont.
