Biography
Born in 1967 in Hamburg, Katja Nordmeyer lives and works in her hometown, where her passion for art and painting was sparked in childhood. Inspired by her amateur painter father, who admired artists like Paul Gauguin and Franz Marc, Katja found her creative path early on.
Initially, however, she pursued a career in fashion. Nonetheless, painting remained a constant part of her life, and she often felt the urge to follow her true calling. This quest led her to study under Lothar Schulz-Goldap, a student of the renowned Prof. Fritz Mackensen, co-founder of the Worpswede artists’ community and director of the University of Bremen. Her solid training in portrait and landscape painting shaped her early work.
Katja expanded her knowledge through training in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and neurosystemic integration. Her interest in human emotions and the belief that we are all influenced by our conditioning, which determines our interpersonal behavior, inspired her to portray the universal core emotions—joy, surprise, fear, anger, disgust, sadness, and contempt—as researched by the American anthropologist and psychologist Paul Ekman. This leads her to paint individuals from various cultures and explores the deeply rooted interconnectedness of all.
In her works, Katja Nordmeyer highlights the imprints we receive from our beautiful and painful experiences, combining strength and vulnerability. She encourages people to embrace their imperfections, revealing our unique beauty.
Katja has developed a unique style influenced by Pop Art, characterized by the use of a special marble-based paste on aluminum perforated sheets. Her works emerge through the accompanying force of the marble, which forms cracks during the drying process, symbolizing the transience and individual characteristics of her motifs. This technique resembles fresco painting, while the recessed perforated sheets give her paintings an almost sculptural expression, creating impressive three-dimensionality.
In her works, she addresses the transience of beauty, emotions, and fleeting moments that live on through her art. The careful selection of motifs and colors, combined with the extraordinary material and special painting technique, leaves a profound impression of passion and emotionality on the viewer.
Katja Nordmeyer is internationally recognized as an artist and resonates with the spirit of the times through her impressive and individual art. Her works are not only an expression of her inner world but also an invitation for viewers to reflect on their own human experiences and the imprints that influence our behavior.
My artistic journey is an intimate expression of the human experience, nurtured by my passion for psychology and the complex world of emotions. Through my studies in psychology and neurosystemic integration, I have recognized the deep roots of our conditioning that shape our relationships and guide our behavior. In my work, I transform marble and aluminum perforated sheets into storytellers that speak of memories and feelings. The cracks in the marble reflect our vulnerability, while the perforated sheets symbolize the brain's ability to change and grow. With every brushstroke, I explore the beauty in our imperfections and invite the viewer to engage with their own stories and emotions. Thus, a dialogue about being human emerges.
My art is driven by a desire to touch people and encourage them to show their own vulnerability and emotions. I strive to create a space where viewers can reflect on their own experiences. It is particularly important to me to address women's rights and the inequality that many women still face. My works are a call for empathy and dialogue to promote social justice. I hope that my art inspires viewers to share their own stories and confront their feelings, fostering a deeper understanding of one another.

My works are characterized by emotionality and originality, my style and technique are organic and natural. I preferably paint on perforated aluminium plate, using a filler that fractures over time, creating rather spatial and lively looking compositions. I concern a lot about the transitory things in life – materialism in general but more importantly the immaterial like moments, emotions and feelings.
From blank to covered, empty to full, clean to dirty, fresh to rotten, new to broken to repaired, happy to sad, relaxed to angry, love to hate, young to old – life is defined by transitions, hence everything in life is transitory. If these transitions are perceived as positive or negative depends on the perspective of the observer – Relativity.
However, I believe that despite all relativity and transitory character of life, it is vital to focus on the here and now, never losing certain values out of sight. This is what my art aims to express.
My recent works, mainly female appearances, emphasize the importance of equality and the beauty of multiculturalism. Recent national and global events have shown a serious lack of pro-multicultural behaviour. I believe that art as a traditional medium, especially in the modern media jungle, is a gateway to symbolize important values. Respect, equality, multiculturalism and togetherness, fuelled by creativity and passion – these are the values I and my art stand for.
