Intuitive abstract paintings inviting you to live fully & deeply

Details

Laura Mitsu (she/her) is a California-based abstract artist creating bold, intuitive paintings that explore the emotional depths of the self. Her work invites viewers into a space of feeling, using color, movement, and organic mark-making to evoke connection and presence.

A self-taught artist, Mitsu spent a decade working in high-pressure, male-dominated, professional kitchens before returning to her first love: visual art. What began as a quiet return to creativity soon became a full-bodied need for artistic expression. Her process is fluid and intuitive, unfolding in a state of flow where energy and curiosity guide the work. Poems often emerge alongside her paintings, offering deeper entry points into her world.

As a woman, she was often told to quiet her emotions and to “be less sensitive.” Her art is a rebellion against that. She paints abstractly and instinctively, led by emotion over form. While she primarily works in acrylics, she often incorporates materials like oil sticks, pumice, or gold leaf—whatever the piece calls for. Brushes, tools, and her hands become extensions of feeling. Rooted in authenticity, emotion, and the fleeting nature of existence, her art is both a mirror and a reminder: to live boldly, feel deeply, and honor all parts of ourselves.

In 2024, Mitsu debuted her first solo exhibition, Poetic Abstraction, in San Francisco. Her work has been shown throughout the Bay Area, CA, featured in print, and collected across the U.S. and internationally.

I came to painting not through formal training, but through a return to myself. My process is about quieting the noise of the outside world and tuning in to the vastness within. I don’t plan my paintings in advance—I let them unfold organically as I work in a state of flow, where energy, intuition, and curiosity guide the work. Poems often emerge alongside the paintings, offering insight into how each piece moves me—deepening the conversation between myself, the artwork, and the viewer. I enjoy sharing these poems with my collectors and on social media.

My paintings are vibrant invitations to live more fully and feel more deeply—a rebellion against all the times I’ve been told I’m “too sensitive” or made to believe that vulnerability is weakness. My work explores themes of authenticity, connection, and the fleeting nature of existence. Life is short, and tomorrow isn’t promised.

I hope to encourage viewers to embrace their full, authentic selves—to live boldly and love themselves along the way. Choosing to be an artist, and sharing my art each day, is how I honor these truths in my own life.
