Liz Barick Fall is a Michigan artist who works in photography, mixed media assemblage and installation. With a BFA from the University of Michigan and an MFA in Metalsmithing from Cranbrook Academy of Art, she developed and ran production jewelry and home accessories businesses, and taught Metalwork and Jewelry Design at The University of Michigan and Adrian College, and 2D and 3D Design at Washtenaw Community College. In 2012 she founded trustArt studios, an artists' workspace and gallery, to provide opportunities for creative collaboration in her community. Fall incorporates a myriad of materials and techniques, creating layered and nuanced works ranging from quiet mediations on nature to commentary on a range of contemporary issues. Fall’s recent work has been shown regionally and nationally in solo, invitational and juried group shows, has also been included in several publications and can be found in private collections in the US and Europe.
My work is an amalgam of collected materials, found objects and photo images. Attention to detail, craftsmanship, purposeful juxtaposition of materials, and deliberate consideration of every element are integral to my process. The context and inspiration within the materials themselves, from their aesthetic qualities to the intrinsic meaning they may carry contribute to the content and integrity of the work. The natural world, the landscape, domestic life, and architecture permeate my pieces. I am interested in the intersection/effect of humankind's social constructs with the various environments in which we live, and how those places and interactions inhabit and affect us. I draw from themes of the deep observation and meditation of the incredible beauty of nature, human made environmental impact and climate change, the female experience of patriarchal oppression, nostalgia, memory, and documenting the passage of time.
