Living in the Sandhills of Nebraska provides many opportunities for me to witness and experience the changes and beauty of the region. The Sandhills region has been a constant source of imagery for me. The area is filled with a simple beauty that is subtle, quiet and alluring. The images I see become the subjects for my paintings that express the spirit and soul of the Sandhills. My hope for my paintings is to evoke a quietness that invites the viewer to participate at a deeper emotional level. Or my work may be a happenstance moment becoming a narrative image unique to the region.
I like to express the soul of the scene through control of light, color, and mood. I may begin by painting en plein aire and then work through my studies developing the image through design placement, value studies and color to create the feeling unique to the time, and quality of the day. Through my paintings I hope to express the evolving changes of life, the changing seasons, and communicate the feeling of living a vulnerable but blessed life.
