Sharay Lawson is a self-taught artist based in Saline, Michigan. Since beginning her artistic practice in 2006, she has explored creative expression with a sense of curiosity and emotional depth. Her work reflects a personal interpretation of everyday moments, shaped by imagination and a desire to highlight beauty in its many forms.
Sharay’s practice is guided by intuition rather than a single genre. Her portfolio includes abstract, impressionistic, realistic, and character-driven pieces, unified by her preference for bold color and expressive mark-making. She primarily works with acrylics, oil pastels, markers, and paste, while continually experimenting with new media and techniques.
Until 2024, Sharay focused her time on a corporate career, but now spends her time focused on art. Early in her artistic journey, she remains open to growth and inspiration, drawing influence from the diverse community of artists who inspire her to keep exploring, learning, and refining her craft.
I approach painting as a direct translation of thought into form—embracing ideas as they arise: unexpected, intuitive, and unconstrained by loyalty to a single style or method. Rather than pursuing a fixed style, I allow each art piece to determine its own visual language, often drawing inspiration from quiet, everyday moments that might otherwise go unnoticed. In still work, I begin with careful observation and preliminary sketches, building layers of detail through materials that feel most responsive to the subject. In abstract pieces, I establish a palette and surrender to the process, allowing movement and instinct to guide the composition. As a growing artist, I regard mistakes not as failures but as generative elements within the process. Working across acrylic paint, oil pastels, paper, and mixed media, I remain open to experimentation. Ultimately, I hope to create a space for viewers to form their own personal connections within each of my art pieces.
