Gloria Carnevale is a Canadian-Italian visual artist, curator, and educator based in Shenzhen, China. Her practice combines contemporary printmaking and photography, transforming personal photographs and family archives into layered monoprints using image transfer techniques and digital processes. Working in series, she explores themes of identity, memory, place, and belonging through bold colour, rich textures, and repeated imagery.
With a background in Fine Arts, Design, and Education, Gloria balances her studio practice with teaching, curating, and community arts initiatives. She is a founding member and Co-Chair of the International Shenzhen Artist Forum (ISZAF), an artist collective that fosters collaboration and creative exchange within Shenzhen's arts community. She is passionate about fostering creativity through collaboration, mentorship, and the exchange of ideas.
My practice explores memory, identity, and belonging through contemporary printmaking and photography. I begin with personal photographs, family archives, and images gathered from the places I live, explore, and encounter in everyday life, transforming them into layered monoprints that shift between documentation and interpretation. Rather than preserving a single moment, each print becomes a reimagining of lived experience.
Working in series allows me to investigate a single idea from multiple perspectives. Through repetition, variation, and experimentation, I explore how colour, pattern, texture, and composition influence meaning. Every print is unique, embracing the unexpected qualities of the printmaking process while revealing new ways of seeing familiar imagery.
My ongoing series Iconic draws inspiration from photographs of my parents in their younger years, reimagining the iconic portraits our family has treasured for decades. In Floral Fragments, photographs of flowers collected from the places I call home in Canada, Italy, and China become visual markers of place, transition, and belonging. Together, these series explore how personal histories and the environments we inhabit continue to shape who we are.
