JaniceMcCarty - The Imperfect Stitcher
Janice McCarty is a mixed -media artist creating one of a kind soft sculptures and stitched works from textiles, fibers, vintage fabrics and found objects.
Drawn to the beauty of things that show their age, Janice embraces faded surfaces, worn edges, stains, holes, visible stitching, and other traces of a previous life. She combines these timeworn fragments with embroidery, hand stitching, collected textiles, and unexpected objects, allowing each piece to evolve intuitively as she works.
Her art celebrates imperfection, history, and transformation-bringing together fragments of the past to create something entirely new.
I started out in fashion design in the mid 1970's with work in both San Francisco and New York before establishing my own clothing design business in Los Angeles. Over the years, I owned and operated three boutiques, designing and producing clothing in house.
My clothing often incorporated antique and vintage -inspired buttons, unusual trims and Textiles.
That collection-and my years of working intimately with textiles-eventually became the foundation for my current work as a fiber and mixed media artist.
Today, I bring those fragments of the past into new pieces through hand stitching, embroidery, repurposed textiles, and soft sculpture.
