Art is Life!
Maggie Stewart is a native of Denver and has been a professional artist for over thirty five years. She is the proud owner of Mama’s Belly, a 26 year old company specializing in bronze belly bowls. She has taught at museums and art centers for over thirty five years. Maggie is currently co-director of Core gallery a Denver based co-op since 1981. Maggie Stewart is a sculptor who effortlessly evolves into an installation artist, her work expands to create immersive environments that invite exploration. She is a collector and alchemist combining diverse elements and inspiration to tell stories. Her artwork is a mixture of mediums, textures, symbols, and ephemera, it is a reflection of her continual experiments and relentless curiosity. She has learned to listen and connect, small notions becoming big ideas, she nurtures them by experimenting in her studio and trusting her vast experience. She actively pursues the unknown by leaning into her uncertainty and thoroughly loves this process! The value of her curiosity cannot be understated! Experimentation and curiosity keep her art and life growing and expanding! Listening to the clues is the key tool. Personal freedom is the goal. She works in multiple mediums and continues to teach, both pursuits expose her to new ideas, solutions and influences. She emphasizes inspiration and motivation, she plays and investigates daily, and by putting her creative energy through that process the results and product are realized! She is currently working on two large shows featuring ceramic organic forms inspired by her macro botanical photography. These ceramics will be presented on her hand painted silk and hand made paper alongside the inspiration photos tying together multiple mediums and celebrating the beauty and movement of nature. Alongside this work is her continual fascination with the tool as art, resulting in ceramic and horsehair Sumi brushes in a myriad of sizes. This is in anticipation of her performance art piece using extremely large Sumi brushes and a steel gantry. Maggie will be driving a very large handmade Sumi brush, hanging from a gantry, controlled with a chain hoist over handcrafted paper. Maggie loves to create large dynamic expressive work and creates the tools to make it happen!
