Nancy Boisvert is a Montreal-based Canadian self-taught artist working primarily in oil on linen and canvas. With more than two decades of painting experience, she creates contemporary figurative works that explore the quiet, instinctive connection between humans and animals.
Originally focused on wildlife realism, her practice has evolved toward emotionally restrained compositions that balance realism with symbolism, atmosphere, and subtle narrative tension. Her paintings often center on stillness, gaze, and gesture, using the presence of animals to reflect vulnerability, identity, instinct, and emotional connection.
Influenced in part by artists such as Gustav Klimt, Boisvert occasionally incorporates elements such as pattern, exposed natural surfaces, and touches of gold leaf while maintaining a refined contemporary aesthetic. Her work aims to create a sense of intimacy and ambiguity, inviting viewers into quiet moments that feel both personal and universal.
Boisvert’s work has been exhibited in juried and group exhibition and is held in private collections in Canada, the United States, and Europe.
I create contemporary figurative paintings that explore the quiet, instinctive connection between humans and animals. Working primarily in oil on linen and canvas, I am drawn to stillness, subtle gesture, and the emotional tension that can exist within a restrained composition. My work often pairs human figures with animal counterparts, not as illustrations of fantasy, but as reflections of vulnerability, identity, protection, and presence.
Grounded in realism yet guided by intuition, my paintings balance observation with symbolic elements that invite interpretation rather than provide answers. I am interested in the unspoken, the moments between connection and distance, comfort and uncertainty, familiarity and instinct. Minimal backgrounds, exposed surfaces, and occasional elements of pattern or gold leaf allow the focus to remain on mood, gaze, and emotional atmosphere.
Through my work, I aim to create images that feel both intimate and quietly unresolved, encouraging viewers to pause, reflect, and form their own emotional connection to the subjects.
