At Women in Arts Network, every month begins with a simple yet meaningful idea: bringing artists from around the world together through a shared creative theme. Our virtual exhibitions are more than open calls, they are opportunities to build a global community where artists with different backgrounds, experiences, and artistic styles can respond to the same idea in completely unique ways. Every exhibition becomes a reminder that while a single theme may unite us, it is the diversity of vision that makes the collection truly extraordinary.
Behind each monthly theme is a thoughtful and collaborative process. Our team spends time discussing ideas that are timeless, relevant, and open enough to inspire artists working across every medium. We look for themes that encourage reflection, spark curiosity, and leave space for personal storytelling, allowing every artist to bring something authentic to the table. Whether inspired by emotion, memory, identity, nature, or the beauty hidden within everyday life, each theme is carefully chosen to create a meaningful experience for both the artists who participate and the audiences who explore their work.
With that vision in mind, we’re excited to introduce this month’s virtual exhibition theme: The Beauty of Still Life. An invitation to discover the extraordinary within the ordinary and explore how everyday objects can become powerful expressions of memory, emotion, symbolism, and personal perspective.
Still life has often been associated with carefully arranged flowers, fruit, ceramics, or everyday objects, but it has never been simply about what appears on the table. Behind every composition lies a choice, a memory, an emotion, or an idea waiting to be discovered. What may seem ordinary at first glance can become deeply meaningful when viewed through the artist’s perspective.
A single object can hold countless interpretations. A well-worn teacup might speak of family traditions, a vase of fading flowers may reflect the passing of time, while treasured keepsakes can preserve stories that words cannot express. Through color, light, texture, and composition, artists transform familiar objects into visual narratives that invite viewers to pause, reflect, and connect.
That is what makes The Beauty of Still Life such an enduring and compelling theme. It celebrates the quiet beauty found in everyday life while encouraging artists to look beyond appearances and uncover the emotions, memories, and symbolism hidden within ordinary things. Whether your work is realistic, abstract, conceptual, or experimental, still life offers endless possibilities to express your unique perspective and reveal the extraordinary within the familiar.
One of the most fascinating aspects of still life is that no two artists will ever interpret it in quite the same way. Place the same collection of objects in front of ten artists, and you’ll likely see ten completely different stories emerge. Some may be drawn to light and composition, while others focus on memory, symbolism, texture, or emotion. What one artist sees as a quiet moment of comfort, another may transform into a reflection on change, resilience, or identity.

This freedom of interpretation is what makes still life such a rewarding theme to explore. It encourages artists to look beyond appearances and consider the personal meaning behind the objects they choose to depict. Whether your work celebrates beauty, questions tradition, preserves a memory, or captures the poetry of everyday life, your perspective shapes the narrative. Through your creative choices, familiar objects become deeply personal expressions that invite viewers to pause, reflect, and discover new stories within the ordinary.
Each month, our team carefully selects a theme that invites artists to engage with ideas that are both meaningful and open to interpretation. For this exhibition, we chose The Beauty of Still Life because it encourages artists to slow down, observe their surroundings, and discover inspiration in places that are often overlooked. In a fast-moving world, still life reminds us that beauty doesn’t always demand attention, it often exists quietly in the objects we live with every day.

This theme is intentionally expansive. It welcomes traditional still life compositions while embracing contemporary, conceptual, and experimental interpretations across all artistic mediums. Whether your work is rooted in realism or abstraction, it offers an opportunity to explore the memories, emotions, and stories that ordinary objects can hold. Rather than focusing on what is being depicted, we hope to celebrate why those objects matter to the artist who chose them.
Applications are open to women artists and non-binary artists aged 18 and above from anywhere in the world.
We welcome submissions from artists at every stage of their creative journey, from emerging practitioners to established professionals.
