Pastel: A new perspective!
Pastel: A new perspective!
Let me introduce myself: Annick Létourneau, a true Montrealer. I've always loved drawing; it's a family thing. When it came time to choose a university path, law prevailed (also a family affair!). I practiced for 10 years before transitioning to communications, never stopping drawing—I've been seriously dedicated to it for over 14 years. I've also taken several advanced courses to improve my techniques and broaden my horizons.
Initially interested in figurative art (the body in all its forms, in graphite), I quickly moved to abstract art, where my passion for figures and colors can be freely expressed.
I have since developed a very personal style and approach to dry pastel that has allowed me to move forward and participate in many exhibits:

Initially interested in figurative art (the body in all its forms, in graphite), I quickly moved to abstract art where my passion for figures and colors can be freely expressed. I draw inspiration from pure creation, in other words, the joy of arranging shapes, colors, and textures that deliberately blend or clash. From these compositions emerge silhouettes, drawings that evoke memories, life principles, realities... that have the power to provoke emotion, thought.
By choosing abstraction, I wanted to enhance the observer's experience by offering the freedom of interpretation. I don't propose a consensual work, but a shared experience enriched by the conversations it sparks.
I usually start a piece with a sketch, often diffuse, even temporary. Then, I explore and push the limits of soft pastel by creating new and different textures, for example, by shaping or enhancing the first trace it leaves on paper. This intuitive improvisation complements the abundance of details that characterize my creations, giving them a raw aesthetic.
Finally, pastel and graphite are ideal allies, allowing me to deepen my expression on paper daily. They also help make my drawings unique, deeply personal works that illustrate life in all its nuances.
2025 - I have been selected to feature in the Studio Visit Book, Volume 6 - Women in Arts
2024 - At the annual Pastel exhibit in Laval, Quebec, I was the sole abstract pastel artist among 34 exhibitors. The juror, an international pastel artist, awarded me the Creative Prize, recognizing that my approach to pastel was new and interesting.
2023 - After 12 years of exploring pastel, I was strongly encouraged by friends and contacts to organize my first exhibit, which took place in November in Montreal. The setting was perfect, right in the center of the city, and the turnout was extraordinary! It was a very emotional moment for me, as it gave me confidence in my approach and style and reinforced my belief that I was on the right path.
